Fisherman in Fremont Canyon

They say that trout only live in beautiful places.

I can attest to that. I’ve found myself in some of them while exploring the various rivers in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Alaska in my quest to catch trout on a fly rod. Brian has been with me on a lot of them lately.

Fremont Canyon near Alcova, Wyoming is one of them.

Without a doubt.

Brian and I have fished it a couple of times in the past few years and I rank it as one of my top destinations. It’s a tailwater that sits between the Pathfinder and Alcova Reservoirs. The beginning of the tailwater flows through Caldwell Meadows (referred to as The Meadows) before dropping into a stunning canyon before emptying into the Alcova Reservoir.

The Meadows section reminds me of a high mountain, spring creek. It’s not only a beautiful place to fish – but also has some really big rainbows and brown trout - lying in wait in the various riffles, runs, and pools. Taken together – it is one of my all-time top destinations.

This painting is from a picture I snapped of Brian working the lower section of the Meadows in the fall of 2022.
